This clients garden is in the lovely village of Crail in the East Neuk of Fife. The Isle of May can easily be seen from the house, but the garden didn't make the most of the fabulous sea views. A tumbled down rockery, an unkempt lawn and old cherry tree dominated the garden. The owner asked for somewhere that they could sit and enjoy both the morning & evening sun, a place to eat & entertain. They wanted to keep a good sized area of lawn, retain the laburnum & rowan trees, and also asked for a mixture of shrub and herbaceous planting. High on the list was framing the lovely view of the sea and sky. |

In a collaborative project with Green Edge Garden Design, a plan was created to transform the garden. The old rockery was replaced with an enlarged natural grey sandstone terrace, which ties in with the house and would provide a place to catch the sun, eat outside and enjoy the ever changing view. Wide leisurely sandstone topped steps lead from the side of the terrace down to the curvy sinuous lawn. A pebble path leads down the side and along the front of the house. |

The terrace wall has been rendered and painted in a beautiful shade of blue/green, linking it to the colour of the sea. It provides a stunning backdrop to the predominantly purple foliage shrubs and flowers planted there. Elsewhere in the garden, the planting is a mixture of hard working shrubs & herbaceous plants which can to survive the windy and salt laden conditions. These include Cotinus, Geraniums, Amelanchier, Sedums, Crocosmia, Lavender and Box balls. Various climbers were used to scramble up the trees also. An espalier apple tree is growing against the warm & sunny south facing wall and the rowan tree Sorbus vilmorinii was planted in the lawn at the bottom of the garden, which can be sat under to catch the last of the day's sunshine.
