This owners of this garden find it so unusable and uninviting that they never venture out there. It's on a slope, has unattractive paving, worn grass and a large row of conifers which cast shade and make it difficult for anything much to grow. They wanted to use the space for a variety of things - a place to enjoy the sun & read, a place to dine out & entertain friends and some lawn for grandchildren to play on. The clients enjoy classic design and materials, and wanted to include hard working plants that didn't require too much maintenance. So the design includes a natural stone patio outside the french doors, and a decked area which is large enough to seat half a dozen people for dining. To give the space extra interest and an extra feeling of width, these are laid at an angle to the house, rather than straight on.

To deal with the slope, there is a small retaining wall and 2 sets of steps from the stone terrace - one up to the lawn and the other directly up to the deck. The lawn is a flowing curvaceous shape and surrounded by good, but not overwhelming sized flower beds. These beds also helps divide the terrace from the more sociable dining deck, creating a feeling of seperate rooms. The owners of this garden are obtaining quotes for construction at the moment and the build will hopefully be starting soon. | |
